The miracle of the ring - Part 2

This is the second part of the story that I told over Easter. To see the previous story click here

After finding her precious ring on Easter Day, Donna was so happy and relieved she thought she may share the happy story with her mum, who had given her the ring. She figured that her mum would not be too worried now that the ring had re-emerged. What followed was quite funny!

Her mum revealed that she too had lost one of the earrings Donna had bought for her from the gift shop at the Met in New York. “I lost it somewhere in the City, may be in Lt Lonsdale St. and I was devastated. I did not want to tell you, so I went looking everywhere for a replacement. I could not find anything, but a kind jeweler undertook to contact the Met and have sent over another set. True to his promise,  he did it, and now I have three earrings! I never wanted to tell you, because I was so sorry.”

2 concerts not to be missed!

Massimo Scattolin, a wonderful Italian guitarist and a friend with whom I grew up in Treviso, will be performing at the Melbourne Recital Centre on the evening of February 23. Massimo will present a new composition of his entitled "The Melbourne Suite" inspired by his numerous visits to Melbourne over the years. As I have listened to him practising for it and many other pieces, I can tell you that is moving, clever, profound, insightful and unforgettable. There are parts devoted to the Yarra River, the city at night and during the day and again to Brunswick, Fitzroy, Parkville (and even Toorak!). Wherever Massimo stayed and made friends he recorded the emotions in his heart and mind and took those emotions as the inspiration for a piece that celebrates our much beloved Melbourne. Do not be a mug: don't miss out. Contemporary pieces for any instrument with the capacity to move do not happen often. You only have my word for it but  Trust me. You will not be disappointed.

Massimo is internationally known as a classical guitarist but he has explored other forms of music, including Cuban music. In the last 5 years he has toured the world with the sons of Compay Segundo, the founder of the  Buena Vista Social Club, who continue their father's tradition and are the true incarnation of the original Buena Vista. You can You tube Massimo by searching "Grupo Compay Segundo" and you will hear a charming orchestral interpretation of the Chan Chan.

Equally, if you can bring yourself to the Brunswick Town Hall this Thursday night you will witness another amazing musical event: a performance of early baroque music by my friends Michele Benuzzi and Elena Bertuzzi (yes, these surnames are uncannily similar and they are partners in real life!). Michele is from Milan and has specialized in harpsichord music. Elena, from Vicenza, near Venice, has a unique soprano voice for early Baroque music. Their performance gives you an amazing insight into a period of music where the musician's skill combined with story telling to reach technical heights that impress you even in this 21st century and stick to the mind like glue. For a mere $20 a ticket, you will receive a gift that will stay with you for life.

I love to support local products

I have found the perfect, non stinking, non irritating mozzie repellent! This product is made by a small family owned business in the Riverland. (Let’s give this local small company a go, this is really effective!) I can finally go outside in the evening to enjoy a glass of wine al fresco! www.pureselection.com.au

Summer Coda is an emotional film.

Mrs Pomeranz on the Movie Show said it lacked pathos. I do not know what experience of loss she has, may be more than me or more than I can imagine. But if you have experienced loss – of family, of loved ones – than you’d have to get it. Exquisitely handled, free of crass Hollywood vulgarity, totally local, totally Australian without nationalism. I cried all the way, especially the scene in my restaurant where OJ man tells Heidi about the things we could have said and sometimes we neglect to say…Bravo Richard and the cast. So refreshing to see Alex in a serious, painful role and done so without being in your face.

My new truck driving friend

I am getting out of the change room at the local pool. I am so clumsy I begin to drop my keys, my glasses, my towel. This guy, this Adonis, this Apollo (I am not gay) with blond, long hair says to me: “Got too much on your mind, mate!” “Yes, not  a good day”- I said, looking up at this Herculean figure with the face of an angel. “Yes, some days are like that. I know….”

“What do you do for a crust,” - I say

“I am a truck driver”

“What, with a face like that? I would be on the cat walk” – I said (same advice, by the way, I gave Curtis Stone!)

“No, mate I am happy driving trucks” – he replies

“Plenty of time to think about life” – I push on.

“Noh, just staying awake, I have a lovely family…two little girls…anyway, I used to be a chef, and I love what you do. Can I shake your hand? I always wanted to meet you”

I felt like a woman swept away by God Apollo himself.

See,I dislike truck drivers because they let it rip just outside my house….I dream of throwing bottles full of piss or rotten eggs  at every truck driver going past.

But no more now – what if I hit him?
